In March 2024 Annelle Sheline stepped down from her position at the U.S. State Department (DoS), stating, “I can no longer continue what I was doing. I hope that my resignation can contribute to the many efforts to push the administration to withdraw support for Israel’s war, for the sake of the 2 million Palestinians whose lives are at risk and for the sake of America’s moral standing in the world.”
Since leaving DoS, Dr. Sheline has returned to the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft (Quincy Institute) which believes “that a foreign policy that emphasizes military restraint and diplomatic engagement and cooperation with other nations will serve American interests and values better than policies that prioritize the maintenance of U.S. global dominance through force.” See www.quincyinst.org

She previously served as a Foreign Affairs Officer at the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor’s Office of Near Eastern Affairs (DRL/NEA), before resigning in March 2024 in protest over the Biden administration’s unconditional support for Israeli military operations in Gaza. She is completing a book manuscript on religious authority in the Middle East.
