Symposium: Alaska in the Crosshairs: Climate, Arctic Environment, and the Resurgence of Nuclear Weapons

Date & Time:

February 16, 2024 @ 7:00 pm AKST - February 17, 2024 @ 5:00 pm AKST

The Arctic is warming four times faster than the rest of the planet, triggering global climate disruption. As development in an ice-free Arctic seems inevitable, Alaskans bring a unique voice and experience to help assure retention of regional stability, Indigenous rights, and a healthy environment.

Juneau, Alaska’s, Veterans For Peace and World Affairs Council, with the support of the Village of Point Hope and Alaska Peace Center, have joined to explore this Arctic intersection of climate science, nuclear history, and increased militarization of this increasingly-accessible region.

– On February 16 (Friday evening) – Join Dan O’Neill, author of “The Firecracker Boys”, as he sets the stage with a recounting of Alaska’s near-miss nuclear environmental disaster known as Project Chariot.

– On February 17 (Saturday 9a – 5p) – Full-day symposium featuring discussions with national and international experts on the role of Alaska in a changing and increasingly-developed Arctic.
All events are both online and in-person at the Egan Library Lecture Hall, University of Alaska Southeast
