On March 5th, during the 3rd Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), a coalition of groups will call on the United States to join the treaty and lead the world toward global, verifiable nuclear disarmament.
March 5th 2025, is the 55th anniversary of the entry into force of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) which legally bound the world’s five nuclear armed nations, including the U.S., to negotiate a treaty for complete disarmament at an early date. The five have refused to do so. However, so much of the rest of the world negotiated the TPNW in 2017, offering the five nations a chance to make good on their legal commitment under the NPT.
March 5th is also Ash Wednesday, the traditional Christian day for repentance and changing direction. Unless the nuclear armed states do so, they will sooner or later turn the planet to radioactive ash.
