Join us to Celebrate the 3rd anniversary of the TPNW’s Entry into Force!

At 4:30 pm, Monday, January 22, at the Democracy Statue on Main Street, Burlington we will gather, speak and march up Church Street, to celebrate the Ban Treaty, and also to inform our citizens that the Doomsday Clock may change its time!

On January 22, 2021 – following a decade of advocacy by international  disarmament groups, especial ICAN (the International Campaign to Against Nuclear Weapons) – close to half the world’s nations have adopted a landmark global agreement to ban nuclear weapons, known officially as the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

It has had an impressive impact. The treaty has prompted banks and other financial institutions to divest billions of dollars from the companies that manufacture nuclear weapons – because they are now banned. And it has exposed the dangerous fallacy of nuclear deterrence.

Fundamentally, prohibiting nuclear weapons is about safeguarding humanity. About ensuring that cities are not targets in warfare. About bequeathing a safe and habitable planet to future generations.

What is the Doomsday Clock?

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, stewards of the Doomsday Clock, will announce at 10:00 a.m. EST/1500 GMT, January 23, 2024 whether the clock needs to be changed. What will this mean for our planet?

The Doomsday Clock is a symbolic timepiece maintained by the Bulletin, showcasing how close they believe humanity is to a global catastrophe. It uses the imagery of midnight, symbolising destruction and the countdown to zero of a nuclear explosion, to convey the urgency of threats facing humanity.
