A soldier during the bloodiest part of the Vietnam War in 1968, and returning from Vietnam and frustrated by everyone’s lack of understanding of the war in Vietnam, he felt strongly compelled to do something. He joined the Vietnam Veterans Against the War and returned to Saigon to document firsthand corruption as an independent journalist. Determined to expose the graft and human rights abuses he had witnessed, his investigation landed him in a rat-infested Vietnamese prison.
